Bronx House of Detention for Men Utility Upgrades and Facility Renovations

C&L Contracting was engaged to renovate the eight-story, 350-cell Bronx House of Detention for Men. This project entailed construction of a three-story addition to the building’s main entrance to house administrative staff and a central security control room. The project’s scope also comprised a major expansion to the existing mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including new steam boilers and electrical services, as well as mechanical equipment, associated distribution systems and emergency generators. Additionally, the clinic was reconstructed and renovations were made to the facility’s cells, helping to improve quality of life for the inmates.

Crew Shell House

Columbia University’s Crew Shell House is steps away from the Hudson River at Baker Field. Comprised of the 1929 Boathouse and Gould-Remmer Boathouse, the newly renovated Crew Shell House provides two, three-bay shell houses that open directly onto an apron close to the water and locker rooms for visiting crews.
C&L Contracting also constructed an upper-level meeting area overlooking the water. The second-floor mezzanine features an observation deck showing off the building’s scenic location alongside the beautiful Inwood Hill Park, which overlooks the confluence of the Harlem and Hudson Rivers. C&L also constructed a training room at the Crew Shell House that features an indoor rowing machine.

Interior Alteration of 44 Morningside Drive

C&L Contracting completed a gut rehabilitation of 44 Morningside Drive, a six-story building that provides 31 apartments to faculty and graduate students of Columbia University in New York. The renovation of the 49,509 square-foot building featured sustainable elements and included replacement of the exterior roofing, and restoration of the building’s facade and parapets. A new cornice and elevator further modernized the property, which sits on an 11,400-foot lot. The project also included the installation of new hardwood floors, kitchens and bathrooms, as well as new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. All exterior windows, roof parapets and roofing were replaced. The exterior facade, including limestone and brick, were also restored.

New York Aquarium Restaurant Facility

C&L Contracting was engaged to construct a ground-level restaurant facility for the New York Aquarium located at West 8th Street and Surf Avenue in Brooklyn. The project included the construction of a new wood frame building that sits on a mat slab foundation, which had to be constructed at low tide due to the elevation of the location. This ground-up project included a new exterior, including roof and wood siding with battens. The new restaurant facility of approximately 7,000 square-feet now offers indoor seating capacity for 132 patrons, including a walk-up service counter, staff dining rooms and restrooms. The dining area was subdivided to create a dedicated space to host meetings or serve as staff dining, and an adjacent outdoor area now provides an additional 180 seats. A water feature and related landscaping were integrated into the restaurant’s frontage. The scope of work also included new site utilities, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

Rikers Island Staff Locker Room

For the New York City Department of Corrections’ facility at Rikers Island, C&L Contracting constructed a corridor that connects the new facility to the main jail. Structural work included a new staff locker room and an interior fit-out, as well as installation of lockers, showers and restrooms, and new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Built from the ground up, construction included building piles with a steel frame, an insulated metal panel exterior and a new metal roof.

Located at 628 West 114th Street, River Hall provides housing for undergraduates at Columbia University. C&L Contracting conducted a demolition of the entire interior of the building, including the floor structure and frame. Construction included reframing of all new floor levels and the build-out of new dormitory rooms, as well as the installation of restrooms and kitchens, and new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

VOR Conversion at Rikers Island/LaGuardia Airport Laguardia VOR/DME Conversion to Doppler VOR/DME Facility 200 Series (Temporary)

This project entailed converting an existing Conventional VOR/DME at LaGuardia Airport to a Government Doppler/VOR/DME Facility. In order to accomplish this, C & L constructed a temporary VOR/DME on Riker’s Island which was utilized by Traffic Control while the existing VOR/DME was demolished, the pier it was supported by refurbished, and the new construction completed. All work was subject to FAA inspection and approval.
