C&L Contracting rehabilitated three New York City Fire Department locations: Firehouse Engine Company 239 at 395 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, Firehouse 259, Engine 1/Ladder 24 at 33-51 Greenpoint Avenue in Long Island City, and Firehouse Engine Company 1 at 142-146 West 131st Street in Manhattan.
Firehouse Engine Company 239 in Brooklyn was originally constructed in 1895. C&L Contracting modernized the 7,000 square-foot structure and renovated the interiors of the building to meet contemporary requirements for firehouses. The front facade was restored to protect the original details, including the sculptured limestone carvings and decorative brickwork. An expansion at the back of the building now provides needed space for the fire department. A glass facade was constructed to enhance the newly, renovated space. The renovation also allows for sustainability and technological advancement options.
Firehouse Engine Company 259 in Long Island City involved a total renovation of the nearly 16,000 square-foot, three-story facility. The project required demolition of the lower-third of the front facade as well as the apparatus floor, kitchen and dining room. The brick facade was replaced and parapets removed and reconstructed, and all windows were replaced and new windows added. A new apparatus floor with three bays for FDNY vehicles was constructed, as well as a new kitchen complete with a dining room, and lounge with a terrace. New offices on the second and third floors, restrooms, dormitories and an exercise facility were created, and the basement was reconfigured. New lighting, electrical and mechanical systems, along with the addition of a central air conditioning unit and an emergency generator were also installed.
The rehabilitation of Firehouse Engine Company 1 at 142-146 West 131st Street in Manhattan began with a full gutting of the building’s interior, including removal of the internal structural frame. During this renovation, C&L Contracting installed a new apparatus floor and support levels, providing additional dormitory space, offices, lockers and toilets as well as a new kitchen, common area and fitness room. The building’s mechanical and electrical systems were also replaced in their entirety. As a result of this rehabilitation, the building now meets all of the requirements of the New York City Fire Department and its firefighters.
